Catalogers Interest Group Meeting Notes 10-25-07

SWON has new Video Conferencing Equipment – Anne is very pleased to announce the purchase and availability of the new video conferencing equipment set up at the SWON office in Blue Ash. Available to all four Ohio regions, the equipment provides excellent video quality and is ready to be tested. CIG may test the new equipment with an hour long video conference with one of the other regions. The old equipment, still in good working order, will be deployed to a SWON member site.

 
New Convener for CIG – With the departure of Aaron Smith, founder and former convener of the CIG, who moved to Indiana, the group needed a new convener. Susan Banoun agreed to serve as the convener of the group. She will keep the same structure and meeting schedule and work hard to continue the goals and services of the group.

Future training needs and/or opportunities

We discussed programming needs for our group or programs we could provide. Some of the upcoming events in which members are involved include:

November 29, 2007- Connie Strait will be co-presenting at an Ohionet workshop on Technical Services Workflow Analysis

Late February or early March 2008 - Akram Pari mentioned that the Cincinnati Chapter of Special Libraries Association (SLA) is sponsoring a program “RDA and the Future of Cataloging.” She is seeking workshop/session ideas and speakers for the program; contact her with any suggestions or questions.

April 1-2, 2008 - Connie also mentioned the Ohio Library Council (OLC) Technical Services Retreat, scheduled at the Mohican Resort and Conference Center, Mohican State Park. Janet Swan Hill will be the keynote speaker.

New CONSER Core Record Standard and Provider Neutral Records for Cataloging Remote Access Electronic Integrating Resources

Susan discussed the two new standards issued from the Library of Congress and provided the websites for more information on each:

Other

Brandy Babb discussed and demonstrated the CCPL wiki, for internal use so far that replaced the library’s shared server. She also discussed the purchase, processing and circulation of 300 games for PS2, PS3, Xbox and Wii systems, implemented in May 2007.
