Susan Banoun (University of Cincinnati), Chris Campbell (International Paper), Rita Doran (Oldham County PL), Patty Logan (Campbell County PL), Carol Macmann (BWI), Jean Small (Oldham County PL), Aaron Smith (Clermont County Public Library), Jane Smith (Boone County PL), Connie Strait (Greene County Public Library), Margaret Whitehead (Boone County PL), and Doug Williams (Campbell County PL)
We began the meeting by brainstorming the ways that this group has been helpful to us as individuals and as institutions. Among the ways:
- Connecting libraries of all sizes
- Helping to establish standards in an increasingly shared information environment
- Circulating information about vendors and available services
- Maintaining currency and perspective in terms of technologies and new information
- Networking, which has facilitated:
A similar brainstorming effort concerning the ways we can better serve one another followed, resulting in these suggestions:
- Further training opportunities
A steering group has been formed to plan a tentative end-of-the-summer GCLC mini-conference; Susan Banoun has expressed interest in serving on this group. If anyone else has input regarding such a conference, please contact Aaron or Susan.
Connie Strait indicated some difficulties with label printing in the midst of the transition from the OCLC Passport utility to their Connexion interface (and an Innovative ILS). We discussed a number of possible options for her in terms of both hardware and workflow, and she will continue to develop options through site visits and experimentation.
We discussed different approaches to coding the date type of resources, including the radically different practices used for video recordings and sound recordings. We consulted MARC bibliographic standards via LC, the OCLC bibliographic standards, a recent OLAC newsletter article by Jay Weitz, and recent AUTOCAT postings.
The next discussion concerned basic MARC coding problems and definitions specifically dealing with 008/39 and 040 fields. Doug Williams offered a very elegant explanation of what it meant to be an “originating”, transcribing”, or “modifying” agency. We also reflected on what it means to ignore these (and other) fields in the interests of saving time and the needs of our own users, when resource exchange is becoming much more common, and when different software platforms use different fields and subfields for indexing.
The GCLC Interest Group Summer Picnic is scheduled for Tuesday, June 7. Details are available at http://www.gclc-lib.org/ce/viewevent.php?id=517

On the agenda will be further discussion concerning the possibility of a single day conference program focusing specifically on cataloging issues. Please reflect on your needs and desires for such a gathering during the interim.
Respectfully submitted, Aaron Smith
