Story Time Isn't Just Seuss

At libraries, story time is a key opportunity to develop early childhood literacy skills. It’s also a chance to teach their parents and caregivers how to develop skills like Phonological Awareness.

Multiple Ages, Multiple Audiences

What do you do when you have children of multiple ages in a single story time? How do you work on literacy skills that are relevant to a child who’s just walking and a child in preschool? There’s no one set of material that’s effective with both audiences. Saroj Ghoting will share information and specific examples to help you answer these questions.

Saroj Ghoting, Early Childhood Literacy Consultant

SWON is excited to bring Saroj back to Ohio to help you tailor effective story times for multi-age audiences. In these all-day sessions (9:00-4:30), you’ll learn about child development, receive demonstrations of story time models, see examples of how to present books/activities in different ways to meet the needs of the wide age range of children, and learn ways to share early literacy information as part of story time. Hands-on practice and idea sharing bring this information to life.

Four Days, Four Cities

To make these sessions widely accessible, SWON is coordinating with SERLS to bring Saroj to four sites across Ohio: Greenville, Wilmington, Wellston and Cardwell. When Saroj came to northern Kentucky in April, seats sold out so quickly that we couldn’t even open general registration. We’ve chosen several locations to bring these sessions to a wider audience.

For Libraries, Big And Small

Multi-age story times are common in smaller libraries, it’s true. There often aren’t enough children in specific age groups to support several story times. But family, drop-in and bilingual story times in metro libraries are often multi-age, too. If early childhood literacy is a priority for your library, you can benefit from these sessions.
