I would certainly be interested in helping connect courier systems. The
Texas service currently includes four surrounding states and it would be
wonderful for our patrons to expand upon those services.

Subject: [Moving Mountains] ALA Midwinter discussion on physical
delivery

Mark your Calendars for the first ever meeting of the ASCLA ICANS
Physical Delivery Discussion Group at ALA Midwinter. We're scheduled
for Sunday 1/13 from 8-10. Room to be announced. We can discuss any
issues of interest to the group - here are some suggestions.

"Explore best practices related to the physical delivery of materials
between libraries and delivery directly to patrons. Our goal is to
increase and improve high volume, low cost delivery options to
libraries. We'll discuss best practices related to physical delivery,
including in-house trucking systems, contracting with courier companies
and using national services like UPS or Fed Express. Question: do we
want to do an IMLS grant to explore linking existing courier systems?"

According to the American Library Association, nearly 1.3 billion
library patrons checked out more than 2 billion items in fiscal year
2005. Colorado's 114 public libraries saw just shy of 28 million
visitors in 2006.
