Retired Librarians Interest Group Meeting - June 29, 2007 Meeting Notes

Introductions

  • When did you retire and from what library?

What do we want this group to do?

  • Reach out to other retirees and those considering retirement or about to retire: discussion of how to reach and invite those interested in this type of interest group
  • All are welcome to attend, regardless of type of library or retiree status
  • Get together to discuss common interests and concerns about retirement
  • Meet three times a year, in the Spring, Summer, and Fall
  • Avenue for discussion, sharing experiences, or questions regarding retirement
  • Avenue for fellowship
  • Sarah will create a website and discussion list for the group

Possible Discussions

  • Making the adjustment to life in retirement
  • Part-Time Work
  • Volunteer Opportunities
  • TIAA-CREF Updates, OPERS/STRS Updates
  • Financial Advisors: Very important to have those familiar with various retirement plans (OPERS, TIAA-CREF, etc.)
  • Fitness and Nutrition
  • Health Care Plans

Possible Presentations

  • OPERS/STRS/TIAA-CREF: What is and is not covered when retiring
  • Medicare: What is covered, where to go for help and how to find out more
  • Retirement Systems: Updates of Legislation issues, proposed benefit changes, etc.
  • Health and Fitness
  • Volunteer Opportunities
  • Annual presentation for librarians and library staff thinking about retirement—what do you need to consider?
  • Tax preparation in retirement
  • Traveling in retirement: Traveling by yourself and overseas
  • Social Security

Possible Field Trips

  • Tied to interests of group members - in retirement, you finally have time to pursue these interests!
  • Gardens in the East Historic District of Newport, KY
  • International Festival in Middletown: Middfest, Oct. 5-7, 2007
  • Oxford has a center for world cultures
  • University of Cincinnati
  • Washington-Centerville Public Library
  • West Chester is building a new library
  • Sugar Village
  • Let Ron and Sarah know about new and interesting events the group might be interested in!
