ROYAL (Reviewers of Young Adult Literature) 6:30 Meeting

ROYAL (Reviewers of Young Adult Literature) is a group of professional librarians and educators from the Greater Cincinnati Area who meet regularly to share information about books we have read. It is an Interest Group of SWON Libraries and is open to all interested parties. The members are school and public librarians who serve young adults and children.

ROYAL meets on the 2nd Tuesday of odd-numbered months (January, March, etc.).

How it works:
Publishers send copies of their new titles to the ROYAL group. These books are aimed at the target audience of YA readers, grades 7-12 (some publishers also send titles for primary, elementary, professional and adult levels). At each meeting, reviews from the last set of books are reviewed orally. The participating reviewers get to choose books to read and review for the next meeting. The number of books taken is based on the number of reviewers at the meeting and the number of books received. Two copies of the reviews are sent to the publisher, and one copy is kept in the archives. The member gets to keep the books that she or he reviews. Most of the reviewers add the books to their library's collection. Most members add close to $1,000 worth of free books to their home libraries.

Running Effective Meetings- Part I

Professionals in organizations report that they attend an average of 62 meetings or taskforces per month. Because these meetings are often run ineffectively or are called when not necessary, those same professionals report that they spend at least part of the time in those meetings daydreaming, dozing, arriving late, leaving early, or missing the meetings entirely. It’s fair to say that meetings have a bad reputation. So managing a meeting effectively is a core skill every facilitator should possess. This 2-hour workshop will discuss the different types of meetings, when to employ each type, the use of agendas and other communication tools, and how to facilitate. Your meetings may not be fun, but they will be effective and worthwhile after the completion of this workshop and no one will be dozing.

Social Networking Tools Inside the Organization

PLEASE NOTE: THIS PROGRAM IS DELIVERED THROUGH WEB CONFERENCING TO THE SWON LIBRARIES OFFICE.

This introductory seminar will take a snapshot look at Web 2.0 social networking tools including blogs, wikis, RSS, feed aggregators (e.g. Google Reader), tagging and social bookmarking (del.icio.us). These are rapidly becoming essential parts of the librarian's toolkit for communication and building community. Don't be left behind! Learn what they do, what their main features are, and how they can be used inside the organization. Examples from libraries and other industries will illustrate the discussion. A brief look at up-and-coming developments will also be included. Recommendations for additional reading will be made.

Critical Learning Questions

What is "social networking", and how does it differ from "social media"?
What are the differences between blogs and wikis, and what would these tools be used for?
What are the differences between feed aggregators and social bookmarking?
What are the obstacles to implementing these tools inside the organization?

Foundations of Communications

Participants will identify their personal communication style through pre-work and will then identify communication styles of co-workers; participants will learn ways to adapt their communication styles to improve working relationships.

Ineffective communication @ work often results in limited cooperation and teamwork; lower productivity; increased job turnover and absenteeism; tension and those nasty rumor mills. That is why it is crucial "we say what we mean and mean what we say" and that we realize that communication is not over when we finish delivering our message. Communication is a 2-way street filled with non-verbal language, innuendos, and lots of assumptions. This 2-hour workshop will examine each participant's individual communication style and will discuss how to adapt that style to your coworker and manager's style for smoother sailing. Bottom line, we hope to minimize communication faux pas.

The PROCESS is being proactive and respectful; establishing ownership for the area; and resolving problems in a consistent manner all the while remaining safe and secure and hopefully stress free. The PROCESS is a new technique designed to get staff from behind the circulation and reference desk and into the public arena at least every 30 minutes to survey the area for safety and security reasons as well as to offer proactive customer service.

Dealing With Difficult People Part 1: Don’t Let Other People Decide How You will Behave

PLEASE NOTE: THIS PROGRAM IS DELIVERED THROUGH WEB CONFERENCING TO THE SWON LIBRARIES OFFICE.

The first part of the seminar is entitled, “Don’t Let Other People Decide How You will Behave.” It will introduce the Assertive Communication Theoretical Model which is recognized as the most effective method of communication for the workplace. Everyone faces stressful and difficult situations every day no matter what the setting. Assertive communication theory recognizes that it is generally not the technical aspects of work that cause stress and frustration. It is in the interpersonal exchanges. With the use of assertive language and behavior, people find situations not only more manageable but more satisfying. The goal is for one to feel good about themselves, the people with whom they interact and the organization they represent.

Critical Learning Questions

How does one make a choice in how to respond?
How does one effectively deal with criticism while still learning from it?
What does one do when confronted by aggression?
How does one respond to racist remarks or personal put-downs

Dealing With Difficult People Part 2: What Was I Thinking!

PLEASE NOTE: THIS PROGRAM IS DELIVERED THROUGH WEB CONFERENCING TO THE SWON LIBRARIES OFFICE.

The second part of the seminar is entitled, “What Was I thinking!” This session uses case studies to highlight examples of the importance of the skill of “reframing”. We do not have control over what happens to us in any given day, WHAT WE HAVE IS control over our responses whether they be to unreasonable requests, handling criticism, negotiating differences or any of the other situations we face. With a skill building approach, participants will learn how to take a situation, examine it from various perspectives, and choose a responsible, realistic and respectful response. Our goal is to use assertive communication to achieve personal effectiveness and good relationships in all our exchanges.

Eighty percent of the time, it is so menial that we hardly give it a second thought and we go on with our day. Another 15 percent of the time, the conflict is more involved and some kind of mediation needs to take place. The remaining five percent of the time, the conflict is so serious that work screeches to a halt until a resolution is found. This 2.5-hour workshop will walk you through a 4-step process of resolving conflict at work so that the resolution is a win/win solution for you and the organization.

Part 2 The Year in Web Searching: News, Updates, and Changes at Google, Yahoo!, Live, and More

PLEASE NOTE: THIS PROGRAM IS DELIVERED THROUGH WEB CONFERENCING TO THE SWON LIBRARIES OFFICE

Take a look at the other side of Web 2.0: the new online Web services tools that make sharing, embedding, and collaborating easier online. Explore ways that Web-based software can be used within organizations to work together on projects and documents. See how to embed presentations, images, spreadsheets, lists, videos, RSS feeds, documents, and other information from one site into another. Investigate tracking options, comment capabilities, and remote hosting. See how other Web-based tools can be used to edit images, manage projects, create flowcharts, build databases, and convert files, all without needing to download and install software.

Critical Learning Questions
What range of Web-based software is available?
How does such software track multiple versions?
What shared editing capabilities are available?
What special functions can be achieved using this software?

Digital Content Management: Critical Deployment Issues in Process & Personnel, Part 1

PLEASE NOTE: THIS PROGRAM IS DELIVERED THROUGH WEB CONFERENCING TO THE SWON LIBRARIES OFFICE

In a digital environment that produces endless amounts of structured and unstructured content, an organization must develop or refine a process that manages that content, and leverages it to the benefit of the organization's mission. Selecting a content management system (CMS) is an important part of this process, but there is much more that needs to be done beforehand to ensure the implementations is successful. Most importantly, any CMS consideration or implementation must first address the organization's people and processes. This pair of presentations presents a planned approach to deploying a CMS, focusing on the frequently overlooked issues of process and personnel.

Part I of this two-part sequential program will address the roots and origins of content management; its role in an organization; its integration into, and synergy with, other organizational functions, and how to choose the best content management system for your organization.

Critical Learning Questions: The pair of presentations will answer, or help participants answer, the following questions:

What is "content" and why does it need to be managed?

How does one define content management (CM)?

What is the CM process?

To what extent does CM integrate with the organization's personnel and organizational processes?

What challenges do I need to address to successfully implement a CM project?

How do I secure contributions and "buy in" to successfully implement a CM project?

Green your Library, Part 1: Why It Is Important to Do It

PLEASE NOTE: THIS PROGRAM IS DELIVERED THROUGH WEB CONFERENCING TO THE SWON LIBRARIES OFFICE.

‘Green’ and ‘eco-friendly’ are two terms that are mentioned and discussed frequently in the media, in businesses, and by individuals today. ‘Going green’ is a trend that has arisen from a growing awareness that global warming is a pressing issue. It reflects the recognition that we all have an impact, and are impacted by it, and that each of us can take action to have a positive rather than a negative impact on the planet.

But what does being ‘green’ mean for libraries and why is it important? How can libraries ‘go green’, especially if they are located in an older building, or one that they have minimal control over (in terms of electricity and water use, for example)? What should new libraries being build take into consideration? What have other libraries done? What are some relatively simple steps that you and your organization can take to be more environmentally friendly? How can you implement those steps in a cost-effective manner?

This Click U Live! two-part seminar aims to answer these and other related questions. The first part will present the case for why it is beneficial for libraries to be ‘green’, not only from an environmental standpoint, but also from a health and cost effectiveness perspective. We will also look at case studies of other libraries that have taken steps to become more environmentally-friendly, and discuss what worked and what did not work for them and why.

Critical Learning Questions

What does ‘going green’ mean?

Why is this relevant to libraries?

What are the potential health and environmental impacts of not taking action?

What steps have other libraries taken that have and have not worked?

What can older libraries do vs. those that are just being built?

What are easy steps that you and your organization can take to ‘go green’?

How can you implement the recommended steps?

How much time will it take and how much will it cost?

Learning the PROCESS : Session 4

Objective:
Increase the comfort level of staff when interacting with patrons; provide staff with diplomatic and consistent approaches for addressing customer behaviors; increase staff sensitivity to the cultural diversity of our patrons; provide written tools to help engage customers and resolve customer problems.

Description:
Working with customers can be the most rewarding aspect of the job and the most stressful aspect of the job. Learning the PROCESS is designed to give public service staff the tools needed to work with customers day-in and day-out.
