Facebook and Twitter: What Your Library REALLY Needs to Know - May 25th, 2010

Anyone can set up a Facebook or Twitter account, but do you really know how to get the most out of them? All too often, libraries jump into the social media arena without a full grasp of what doing so really means. Do you understand what people expect from you in these environments? Does your library have a well-crafted social media policy? Maximize the staff time spent on these tools by getting a solid foundation in effective social media use.

Instructions for participating in the Wimba classroom will be sent to you in advance of the session. If you have never connected to a Wimba Classroom online session before, please run the setup Wizard beforehand. You can read more about Wimba and run the Wimba setup wizard from our Wimba Information Page.

Lessons in Leadership - April 30th, 2010

Truly leading people can be one of the toughest parts of your job. You can be a “manager” without being a leader. When you consider that the definition of the word “supervise” is “oversee,” it becomes clear that to be a leader, you will not only need to be more than a manager, you will need to go beyond supervising as well.

In this workshop, we’ll start by learning how you rate as a leader. What is your role? Are you good at it? We’ll also learn the 15 key characteristics of a top-notch leader – and whether or not you have those characteristics.

We’ll discuss communication styles and learn how to be a better listener – one key to being a good leader. An understanding of the 4 basic behavioral styles will also help us understand how to interact with those styles.

And in case you happen to be dealing with some change in your work environment (and who isn’t??), we will delve into how to handle that change as a leader – and by doing so, how to help your employees deal with it effectively as well.

We will end with brainstorming a list of ways to create a motivating environment. Without it, “leader” becomes just another word for “overseer.”

This intensive workshop will be packed full of practical, useful tips – don’t miss it!

Outcomes
Participants will learn and begin to master:
• How to assess their own leadership skills
• How to recognize and adapt to the 3 communication styles
• How to become a better listener
• How to recognize and work with each of the 4 basic behavioral styles
• How to recognize favoritism
• How to deal with change
• How to create a motivating environment

Succession Planning Workshop For Non‐Profit Agencies - April 14th, 2010

This interactive 3‐hour program is designed for non‐profit executives and board members/chairs. The workshop helps attendees differentiate succession planning as an ongoing management process from executive replacement hiring. The workshop outlines a process for implementing succession planning and executive development; provides tools for aligning management responsibilities with strategy; develops a framework for identifying key behaviors, skills, and experiences when searching for and selecting a new executive; introduces a process for searching and selecting a new executive; and expands the traditional role of ad‐hoc board “search” committees into ongoing “Human Resource Development” committees. During the workshop, attendees will begin to build succession planning and executive development processes; identify key strategic goals of their enterprise and relate them to executive responsibilities; develop a framework for identifying ideal executive director candidates; and develop and practice 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round interview questions.

This program will assist you in developing a plan of action that will result in the creation of a High Impact Board for your organization.

Foundations of Communication - June 29th, 2010

Pre-work is required for this class.

Participants will identify their personal communication style through pre-work and will then identify communication styles of co-workers; participants will learn ways to adapt their communication styles to improve working relationships.

Ineffective communication @ work often results in limited cooperation and teamwork; lower productivity; increased job turnover and absenteeism; tension and those nasty rumor mills. That is why it is crucial “we say what we mean and mean what we say” and that we realize that communication is not over when we finish delivering our message. Communication is a 2-way street filled with non-verbal language, innuendos, and lots of assumptions. This 2.5 hour workshop will examine each participant’s individual communication style and will discuss how to adapt that style to your coworker and manager’s style for smoother sailing. Bottom line, we hope to minimize communication faux pas.

Running Effective Meetings- Part I - April 15th, 2010

Participants will learn the basic steps to running an effective meeting. This includes when to call a meeting; how to use other mechanisms to communicate information; the different types of meetings; how to organize an agenda; and other effective measures to insure the smooth, productive running of a meeting.

Professionals in organizations report that they attend an average of 62 meetings or taskforces per month. Because these meetings are often run ineffectively or are called when not necessary, those same professionals report that they spend at least part of the time in those meetings daydreaming, dozing, arriving late, leaving early, or missing the meetings entirely. It’s fair to say that meetings have a bad reputation. So managing a meeting effectively is a core skill every facilitator should possess. This 2.5 hour workshop will discuss the different types of meetings, when to employ each type, the use of agendas and other communication tools, and how to facilitate. Your meetings may not be fun, but they will be effective and worthwhile after the completion of this workshop and no one will be dozing.

CARE: Caring Attitudes & Respect for Everyone - June 16th, 2010

Attendees will understand the importance of treating both internal customers and external customers with respect, courtesy, and helpfulness by thinking like a customer and exploring customer service situations from the customer’s perspective; attendees will name 1 way they can personally improve the customer service they deliver to either an internal or external customer in their organization.

This class will convey the importance of excellent customer service to the Library’s mission and will emphasize how good working relations with coworkers directly impact service to our customers. The foundation of this workshop is the training video Give’em the Pickle! and the DVD The Simple Truths of Service. Both the video and DVD discuss the value of exceeding customer’s expectations through adding your special touch. In the Library setting this translates into walking a Library patron to the shelf, reminding them of a new item that may be of interest to them or moving out from behind the circulation barrier to meet him/her at the customer’s point of interest to interact. Additionally participants will approach customer service by using these four principals: service, attitude, consistency, and teamwork. At the end of the 2.5 hour workshop each attendee will have 1 new customer service expectation written down that they can enact upon return to their location.

Everyone Serves Youth - June 19th, 2010

Pre-work is required for this class.

Participants will understand the developmental stages of youth from birth to age 18; recognize the 40 Developmental Assets of Youth that help them grow to be caring, responsible, healthy adults; and learn communication strategies for developing positive relationships with these young customers utilizing the Library’s Standards of Library Behavior when necessary.

Three hours may not nearly seem enough time to understand the importance of youth and the impact they have in our Libraries, yet we have to start somewhere. Not only as potential customers, but as future taxpayers, Library supporters, Friends members, and Library patrons, the youth of today are beginning as Life Long Learners at the Library right now. How can we all better serve them? This workshop starts 1 week before participants enter the door with pre-work consisting of observations and interactions with youth, reading and studying the handouts and coming prepared to discuss the objectives. The facilitator will assume that participants will have some background (from the pre-work) and that the background will assist with the small group discussions. A WIKI will be set up before the workshop and will be continually updated after each workshop with information concerning service to youth as a training tool.

Back to the Basics: Readers' Advisory - April 27th, 2010

The regional library systems are again collaborating in a statewide videoconference. This time we are focusing on readers' advisory.

What's on Your Playlist?: Making the Most of Listener's Advisory presented by Jenny Greene, Leslie Mallon, and Teanna Gildersleeve all of Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library
What do a Librarian, a Technical Services Assistant, and an Administrative Assistant all have in common? A love of music. Indeed, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said it best when he stated, "Music is the universal language of mankind." This lively program is presented from the perspective of music lovers and will introduce Music Advisory as a way to expose customers (and ourselves) to new music. Participants will learn new ways to search (using iTunes, Pandora, etc.) for digital music online and develop Music Advisory services at their libraries.

Cool Crime and Hot Romance Readers Advisory presented by "Bloody" Mary Boone, PR Coordinator & Kristin "the Romance Specialist" Wetzel, Librarian's Assitant, Wood County District Public Library.

Urban Fiction: Not Just for Urban Libraries presented by Jessica Powell, Adult Services Librarian, Campbell County Public Library
What is Urban Fiction? Hip-Hop on the page? The Street Life in prose? This session will give an introduction to this burgeoning genre by discussing trends, hot authors, and possible controversy. Does your collection have a home for thee tales of the city?

CLEAR: Children's Literature Evaluation and Review Interest Group - April 8th, 2010

Publishers send copies of their new titles to the Children's Literature Review Interest Group. These books are aimed at the target audience of children from birth through age 11. The group gathers every other month to select books and read reviews. At each meeting reviews from the last set of books are shared with the group. The participating reviewers get to choose books to read and review for the next meeting. The number of books taken is based on the number of reviewers at the meeting and the number of books received from the publishers. The written reviews are sent electronically to the publishers. The participating member gets to keep the books that they review. Most of the reviewers add the books to their library's collection or use the books in their classroom. Most members will add close to $1000 worth of free books to their libraries each year.

There is an annual charge to participate. This charge will be assessed at the February meeting each year. The charge will be $30 for librarians at SWON Libraries member libraries, $30 for teachers, $75 for librarians at non-member libraries.
