Strategic Plan 2008-2009

Background

SWON Libraries was established in July 2006. This Strategic Plan is an initial step at moving forward into an exciting future for the organization. This is a simple plan with a short timeframe. The purpose is to get the planning cycle started for more challenging planning to continue in the future.

The Strategic Planning Committee met between 2006 and 2008 to study the organization, the environment, and the opportunities for the future. Tools utilized include several surveys, small group community forum sessions with members throughout the region, research, and constant input from the membership.

SWON Libraries is one of four Regional Library Systems in the State of Ohio. The region currently served is seventeen counties in southwestern Ohio and three counties in Kentucky.

This plan will be reviewed on an annual basis starting with the beginning of the 2009-2010 program year in July of 2009.

Purpose

Southwest Ohio and Neighboring (SWON) Libraries is a cooperative of area libraries organized to promote library services among and through member institutions. SWON Libraries consists of academic, public, school and special libraries in Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky. A full listing of current members is included at the end of this plan.

Goals

GOAL: Develop effective methods to communicate available services and opportunities to library staff members

Key Success Factors

  • Create tools to communicate to library staff in member libraries
    • Provide internal communication tools at libraries (poster)
    • Provide training tool for staff (video?)
    • Widget for calendar on internal staff pages
  • Focus on ways to get other staff involved
    • Create member institution liaisons
    • More staff lists
    • Market Existing Interest Groups deeper into libraries
  • Explore other CE options outside of SWON Libraries

GOAL: Explore methods to target the unique CE needs of the entire membership

  • Explore alternate delivery methods and approaches (deeper)
    • Technology Playground

  • Gather input from the membership including a needs assessment
  • Identify certification requirements of member libraries

GOAL: Define and clarify “Technology Support”

  • Define appropriate levels of support
  • Develop menu of services and revise fee structure
  • Develop technology resource links for members
    • List of who is using what services

GOAL: Identify and organize resources external to SWON Libraries for the use of the members

Key Success Factors

  • Implement suggestion boxes for various services and resources
  • Develop additional resource links for members
  • Explore offerings from similar organizations
  • Identify potential new services based on gaps in available support

GOAL: Foster collaboration among the members

Key Success Factors

  • Professional Staff reach out to members through visits and reports on the website
  • Develop additional methods for regional cooperation
    • Produce communication on trends in libraries
    • Enhance SSMED (SWON Libraries/SAALCK Member Experience Database)
